Object history
Deutsch: Obernburg kam zusammen mit dem gesamten Bachgau 1313 an das Fürststift Mainz und blieb dort bis zum Ende des Alten Reichs 1803. Der Mainzer Erzbischof Peter von Aspelt (1306 bis 1320) erhob Obernburg 1313 zur Stadt. Kaiser Ludwig der Bayer bestätigte die Stadtrechte 1317. Seit 1465 sind Siegelabdrucke überliefert, von denen der älteste Siegelstempel aus dem 14. Jahrhundert stammt. Bis 1814 zeigen sie das Mainzer Rad. Mit dem Anschluss an Bayern 1814 musste dieser Hinweis auf den einstigen Landesherrn entfallen. Ein neues Wappen erscheint erstmals in der Bürgermeistermedaille von 1819; es steht seitdem in allen Dienstsiegeln. Im Schrifttum des 19. Jahrhunderts und bei Hupp fehlt der Baum, der bisweilen auch als Weinstock gedeutet wurde.
