Napoleon Bonaparte hält auf einer Schaukel die aristokratisch-föderalistischen und die revolutionär-unitarischen Kräfte im Gleichgewicht, während er sich nach dem Grundsatz "teile und herrsche" das Wallis unter den Nagel schlägt. Auf der Schaukel steht hodie mihi, cras tibi (heute mir, morgen dir). Im Hintergrund links die Stadt Mailand, zu der das Wallis der strategische Schlüssel ist (Simplonpass)
