Yhtiön perustivat Seymour Stein ja Richard Gottehrer vuonna 1966 nimellä Sire Productions.[1] Levy-yhtiön ensimmäinen julkaisu tapahtui vuonna 1968. Yhtiö liittyi osaksi Warner Music Groupia vuonna 1978. Sire Recordsille levyttäneitä artisteja ja yhtyeitä ovat muun muassa Ramones, The Smiths, Madonna, Depeche Mode ja HIM.[2][3]
