DescriptionSaeulenmodell EU.svg	Deutsch: Nach dem Vertrag von Maastricht tragen drei Säulen die Europäische Union. Diese sind die Europäischen Gemeinschaften, die Gemeinsame Außen- und Sicherheitspolitik und die polizeiliche und justizielle Zusammenarbeit (in Strafsachen). Mit dem Vertrag von Amsterdam wurde die Zusammenarbeit in den Bereichen Asyl, Einwanderung und Zivilrecht in die Gemeinschaftsmethode überführt. Mit der Ratifizierung des Vertrages von Lissabon wurde die Säulenstruktur aufgehoben und in einem Vertrag zusammengeführt, welcher die Rechtspersönlichkeit der Europäischen Union begründet.
