Object history
Deutsch: Amorbach wurde 1253 zur Stadt erhoben. Es liegt in unmittelbarer Nähe zum gleichnamigen Benediktinerkloster, das im 8. Jahrhundert gegründet wurde. Der Ort und das Kloster waren bis ins 19. Jahrhundert jeder für sich ummauert und durch den Stadtgraben voneinander getrennt. Auch heute noch sind Stadt und Kloster deutlich voneinander abgegrenzt. Amorbach gehörte seit 1272 zum Erzstift Mainz und blieb dort bis zum Ende des Alten Reichs 1803. Aus dem Jahr 1290 sind Abdrucke eines Siegels überliefert mit dem Bild der romanischen Abteikirche. Gleiches Bild steht auch in einem Siegel aus dem späten 14. Jahrhundert, das durch Abdrucke seit 1438 belegt ist. Bis zum Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts änderten sich nur die Architekturformen. Das seit dem 18. Jahrhundert über dem Schild stehende Mainzer Rad musste 1819 als Hinweis auf den einstigen Landesherrn entfallen. Zu dieser Zeit hielt man die Kirchtürme für Gebäude der Stadtbefestigung. An der Decke des Rathauses steht in einer Kartusche mit der Jahreszahl 1687 das Wappen mit dem Großbuchstaben A. Solche Ortsnamen-Initialen in Wappen waren im damaligen Kurstaat Mainz üblich.
