English: Animation of two images of Jupiter's irregular moon Dia (S/2000 J 11), taken by David Jewitt using the 3.6-meter Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) on 9 December 2001. Each image was taken approximately 80 minutes apart. Having an apparent magnitude of 23.1, Dia is very faint and markers are shown to indicate the moon's expected positions in the two frames. The moon is not visible in the second frame due to scattered light from Jupiter's bright glare from the top left corner, which reduces the visibility of fainter stars and moons. Dia was only observed once in 2001, and has not been observed since until its rediscovery in 2011. The raw image datasets used are 615453p, 615459p, and 615465p. For comparison, the star field in these images can be viewed at the CDS's Aladin star atlas. |
