Object history Die Figuren des Wappens, der Schmiedehammer und das halbe Mühlrad, reden für den Ortsnamen. Dieses Motiv ist schon für 1311 als Schildbild im Siegel des Reimbot von Smidmueln überliefert. Das älteste Siegel des Marktes, das in Abdrucken seit 1460 überliefert ist, zeigt ebenfalls dieses Bild. Die Tingierung ist durch die Randmalerei eines Ablassbriefes für die St. Ägidienkirche seit 1489 überliefert, es gab jedoch bis in das 20. Jahrhundert viele Abweichungen in den Farben. Schmidmühlen war durch die Verarbeitung von Eisenerz schon früh zu größerer Bedeutung gelangt und war bereits um 1270 Markt und Amtssitz.
