Description
Français : Partie d'une mosaïque provenant de l'acropole de Rhodes. Elle représente un griffon, créature mythologique avec un corps de lion, mais des ailles et une tête d'aigle (ici, de lion). Guirlande de lierre autour. 2ème moitié du 3ème siècle - 1ère moitié du 2ème siècle avant le présent. Elle est constituée pour partie de tessères non naturels (les blancs et noirs du motif principal notamment) taillés exprès en petits carreaux de pierre. Le reste est en cailloux naturels. C'est ce qui la caractérise et permet de la dater.
English: From the rhodian acropolis. It shows a griffin, made with non natural tesserae (stone cut into small cubic pieces), set in mortar. This technique is typical from 2nd half of 3rd century - 1st half of 2nd century BCE. The rest of the mosaic is made of natural pebbles.
