Object history
Deutsch: Der Ort kam im 13. Jahrhundert an die Markgrafen von Hachberg, die sich nach der auf seiner Gemarkung liegenden Burg Sausenberg fortan von Hachberg-Sausenberg nannten, und 1503 an die Markgrafen von Baden. 1810 erhielt der an wichtiger Straßenverbindung im Kandertal gelegene Marktflecken Stadtrecht, das 1935 aberkannt und 1951 wieder verliehen wurde. Am 1. März 1974 wurde die Stadt durch Vereinigung mit Feuerbach, Holzen, Riedlingen, Sitzenkirch, Tannenkirch und Wollbach neu gebildet. Am 11. November 1975 verlieh das Innenministerium erneut das bisherige Wappen und eine aus den Wappenfarben abgeleitete Flagge. Die Kanne ist ein volksetymologisch aus dem Ortsnamen (älteste, aus dem Jahr 776 überlieferte Form: Cancer) hergeleitetes Symbol. Sie war als Grenzzeichen schon früher in Gebrauch und ist seit der Stadterhebung 1810 in den Siegeln abgebildet. 1899 wurde die Tingierung (badische Farben) festgelegt.
