Deutsch: Karl V. wird hier in jener Rüstung dargestellt, die er in der für ihn siegreichen Schlacht bei Mühlberg 1547 getragen hatte. Die Rüstung befindet sich jetzt im Königlichen Zeughaus in Madrid. Die Figuren am Sockel nehmen Bezug auf den siegreichen und weisen Imperator (Adler, Minerva, Mars oder vielleicht Herkules) und sind in Anlehnung an die Sockelfiguren antiker Büsten der römischen Kaiser gestaltet. Die Büste wurde ursprünglich für Kardinal Granvella, einen Staatssekretär des Kaisers und bedeutenden Kunstsammler, geschaffen. Aus seinem Nachlass erwarb sie dann Kaiser Rudolf II. für seine Kunstkammer. Er wählte sie als Vorbild für sein eigenes Repräsentationsbildnis von Adriaen de Vries aus dem Jahr 1603.
English: Emperor Charles V is shown here in the armor which he wore in the victorious Battle of Mühlberg in 1547. The armor is now located in the Royal Armory, Madrid. The figures at the base are allegories of the wise, victorious emperor (eagle, Minerva, Mars or perhaps Hercules) and in their form are derived from classical busts of Roman emperors. This bust was originally made for Cardinal Granvella, the emperor's secretary of state and a notable art collector. After his death, it was purchased from his estate by Emperor Rudolf II for his Art Chamber. He also selected it as the model for his own representative bust made by Adriaen de Vries in 1603.
