Bhí Bhreathnach ina Tara Research Fellow do the Discovery Programme ón mbliain 1992 go dtí 2000. Sa bhliain 2005, ceapadh í ina Comhalta Iar-Dochtúireachta ag Institiúid Míchíl Uí Chléirigh um léann Stair agus Sibhialtacht na hÉireann, aag an Coláiste Ollscoile, Baile Átha Cliath. Sa bhliain 2013 go dtí 2019, chuaigh sí ar ais go dtí an Discovery Programme mar POF.

Tá suim ar leith aici i stair na Teamhrach, agus polaitíocht na rítheaghlach i riochtaí na Mí agus na Laighean. Faoi láthair, tá sí i mbun obair a dhéanamh le Monastic Ireland network agus ag staidéar ar mhanachas in Éirinn, AD 900-1250.
