Sarjan ensimmäinen peli Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord on julkaistu vuonna 1981. Pelin kehittivät Robert J. Woodhead ja Andrew C. Greenberg.[1]

Sarjaa pidetään yhtenä lajityypin määrittelijöistä Ultiman ja Might and Magic-sarjan ohella.[2]
