Caesar syntyi Durhamissa, Pohjois-Carolinassa, ja aloitti nuorena tyttönä laulamisen kirkossa. Hän valmistui lopulta Shaw Universitystä.
Caesar aloitti ammattiuransa 1950-luvun lopulla gospelryhmässä The Caravans ja suuntautui jo seuraavana vuosikymmenellä soolouralle.[1] Hänelle on myönnetty lukuisia Grammy-palkintoja ja vuonna 2000 paikka Gospel Music Hall of Famessa.
