Karen Armstrong

Karen Armstrong (s. 14. marraskuuta 1944 Worcestershire, Englanti) on englantilainen tietokirjailija, joka kirjoittanut islamista, juutalaisuudesta, kristinuskosta ja buddhalaisuudesta. Armstrong oli vuodet 1962–1968 nunna Society of the Holy Child Jesus -yhteisössä. Tämän jälkeen hän suoritti korkeakouluopintoja Oxfordissa St Anne's Collegessa pääaineenaan englanti. Valmistuttuaan hän jatkoi tohtoriopinnoilla keskittyen Alfred Tennysonin tuotantoon. Hänen väitöskirjansa kuitenkin hylättiin, ja lopulta hän jätti yliopiston saamatta tohtoriopintoja päätökseen.[1]

Armstrong kuvailee teoksessaan Through the Narrow Gate (1982) elämänsä rajoittuneisuutta luostarissa. Vuonna 1984 häntä pyydettiin tekemään dokumenttielokuva apostoli Paavalista. Dokumentin myötä hänen kiinnostuksensa uskontoa kohtaan heräsi uudelleen. Hänestä tuli pian merkittävä ja arvostettu tietokirjailija, jonka suurimpana kiinnostuksen kohteena olivat monoteistiset uskonnot.

Marokkolaisen filosofian professori Ahmed Bouaoudin mukaan kaikkien Armstrongin kirjojen päätarkoituksena on torjua väite, että Muhammed olisi ollut terroristi tai väkivallan kannattaja.[2]
