Johnston voitti vuoden 1986 World Series of Pokerin pääturnauksen ja oli kolmas vuonna 1982 sekä viides vuonna 1990. Hänellä on enemmän (kymmenen) rahasijoja WSOP:n pääturnauksessa kuin kellään muulla[2][3]. Kaikkiaan Johnston on voittanut viisi WSOP-ranneketta, ollut finaalipöydässä 28 kertaa ja rahoilla 53 kertaa[4][5].
Johnston valittiin Poker Hall of Fameen vuonna 2003. Kesäkuussa 2009 hänen pokeriuransa turnausansiot ylittivät 3,3 miljoonaa dollaria[6].
