Ingalaterran jaio zen guraso aktoreekin eta familiak 1792an Estatu Batuetara emigratu zuen. Charlestonen kokatu ziren, Thomasen osabak antzoki bat zuzentzen zuen lekuan. Hemezortzi urterekin pinturan aritu zen, eta hainbat lekutan bizi izan zen 1808an Filadelfian behin betiko kokatu zen arte. 1809an Londresera bidaiatu zuen bederatzi hilabetez Benjamin Westekin margolaritza ikasteko.
Thomas Lawrenceren estiloan egin zituen bere pinturak. Gehienak erretratuak izan ziren, Estatu Batuetako presidenteak, musikariak, konpositoreak... barne. Paisaia eta eszena historiko batzuk ere margotu zituen.
