Bizitza
Chillicothen (Ohio) jaio zen 1828ko apirilaren 26an. Gurasoak James B. Finley apaiz presbiteriarra eta Mary Brown izan ziren. Finley eta Brown familiak eskoziar eta irlandar jatorrikoak ziren. Leinuaren izena Farquarharson zen, eta urte askotan Martha Finleyk izen hori erabili zuen izengoiti gisa[1].
1853ko neguan, Finleyk literatur karrera hasi zuen egunkariko istorio bat eta Baptist Board of Publication-ek argitaratutako liburu bat idatziz. Hasierako lan asko igandeko eskolako aldizkarientzako ipuin laburrak izan ziren. Jatorriz modu anonimoan idatzita, istorioen arrakastak argitaletxeek izena sartzeko eskatzera eraman zuten. Garai hartan Finleyren familiak bere izenarekin argitaratzeari aurka egin zion, beraz, Martha Farquharson aukeratu zuen izengoiti gisa[2].
1856 eta 1870 artean, hogei igandeko eskola-liburu baino gehiago idatzi zituen eta gazteentzako hainbat liburu sail. Helduentzat, hiru eleberri idatzi zituen: Wanted—A Pedigree (1879), Signing the Contract (1879) eta Thorn in the Nest (1886).
Elktonen bizi zen, Cecil konderrian, berak eraikitako etxe batean[3]. 1909ko urtarrilaren 30an hil zen.
