Aita kristal eta zeramika merkataria zen eta Émilek hamasei urte zituenetik familiaren negozioan lan egin zuen. Aisialdian botanika ikasi zuen eta landareak bildu zituen. 1862tik 1866ra Weimarren filosofia, botanika, eskultura eta marrazketa ikasketak jarraitu zituen. Gero, kristalezko fabrika batean lan egin zuen Meisenthalen.
Frantzia-Prusia gerran borrokatu ondoren, Nancyra itzuli zen eta kristalezko tailer bat ireki zuen fabrika familiarraren barruan. 1873an negozioaren zuzendaritzaz arduratu zen eta arrakastaz hedatzea lortu zuen.
Art Nouveau mugimenduaren berritzaileetako bat izan zen, kristal eta altzarien diseinuarekin. Diseinuetan landareak, loreak, intsektuak eta animaliak erabiltzeagatik bereizi zen. 1901ean Nancyko Eskola sortu zuen.
