'লুইস ক্যারল' নামটি শিশুদের কাছে সমধিক পরিচিত তার মজাদার বই 'আজব দেশে এলিস'(Alice in Wonderland) এবং এরই পূর্বানুস্মৃতি(Sequel) মূলক বই 'আয়নার মধ্যে দিয়ে'(Through the Looking Glass) এর জন্য। 'লুইস ক্যারল' আসলে অক্সফোর্ড বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের গণিতের অধ্যাপক চার্লস লুটউইজ ডজসন'র ছদ্মনাম ছিল। বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে গণিতের বই পড়ানোর পাশাপাশি ডজসন ছোটদের জন্য আবোল-তাবোল ছড়া আর মজার মজার সব কল্প-গল্প লিখতেন যা পরবর্তীতে বড়দেরও আকৃষ্ট করতে সমর্থ হয়।
