যৌন আসক্তি হল নেতিবাচক ফলশ্রুতি সত্ত্বেও যৌন কর্মকাণ্ডে বাধ্যতামূলকভাবে যুক্ত থাকা।[5][6] ডাক্তারি রোগ নির্ণয়ের ক্ষেত্রে, আসক্তিকে ভুলবশত যৌন নির্ভরশীলতা বলা হয়ে থাকে, এবং উপরন্তু এটি একটি মতবাদনির্ভর বিষয়কে নির্দেশ করে যেটি সেসব লোকদেরকে বোঝাতে ব্যবহৃত হয়, যারা তাদের যৌন বাসনা, আচরণ এবং এ সম্পর্কিত চিন্তাচেতনাকে নিয়ন্ত্রণ করতে অক্ষম। যৌন আসক্তি সম্পর্কিত অন্যান্য রোগ নির্ণায়ক যৌন আচরণসমূহ হলঃ হাইপারসেক্সুয়ালিটি, সমস্যাপ্রবণ ইন্টারনেট পর্নোগ্রাফি ব্যবহার,[7] ইরোটোম্যানিয়া, নিম্ফোম্যানিয়া, স্যাটাইরিয়াসিস, ডন জুয়ানিজম বা ডন জুয়ানিটিজম এবং প্যারাফিলিয়া-সম্পর্কিত সমস্যাসমূহ। [8][9][10]

• আসক্তি-সৃষ্টিকারী আচরণ – এমন আচরণ, যা একইসাথে পারিতোষণমূলক ও ক্রমশক্তিশালীকরণমূলক
• আসক্তি-সৃষ্টিকারী মাদকদ্রব্য – এমন ওষুধ, যা একইসাথে পারিতোষণমূলক ও ক্রমশক্তিশালীকরণমূলক
• নির্ভরতা – পুনরাবৃত্তিকভাবে উদ্দীপকের সংস্পর্শ থেকে পাওয়া উদ্দীপনা অপসারণের ফলে সৃষ্ট প্রত্যাহার উপসর্গের সাথে সংশিষ্ট একটি অভিযোজিত দশা (যেমন, মাদক সেবন)
• মাদকদ্রব্য সংবেদনশীলতা বা পশ্চাৎমুখী সহনশীলতা – পুনরাবৃত্তিকভাবে নির্দিষ্ট পরিমাণে কোন ওষুধ সেবনের ফলে সৃষ্ট, ওষুধের ধাপে ধাপে বৃদ্ধি পাওয়া প্রভাব
• মাদকদ্রব্য প্রত্যাহার – পুনরাবৃত্তিকভাবে সেবনকৃত কোন ওষুধ প্রত্যাহারের ফলে সৃষ্ট উপসর্গসমূহ
• শারীরিক নির্ভরতা – এমন নির্ভরতা, যার সাথে অটলভাবে শরীরিক-দৈহিক প্রত্যাহার উপসর্গসমূহ জড়িত (যেমন, দূর্বলতা ও ডেলিরিয়াম ট্রেমেনস)
• মানসিক নির্ভরতা – এমন নির্ভরতা, যার সাথে অটলভাবে অনুভূতিগত-প্রেরণাগত প্রত্যাহার উপসর্গসমূহ জড়িত (যেমন, দুঃখীভাব ও নিরানন্দতা)
• ক্রমশক্তিশালীকরণমূলক উদ্দীপনা – এমন উদ্দীপনা, যা নিজের সাথে যুগপৎ আচরণের পুনরাবৃত্তির সম্ভাবনা বৃদ্ধি করে
• পারিতোষণমূলক উদ্দীপনা – এমন উদ্দীপনা, যেটিকে মস্তিষ্ক মনে করে ইতিবাচক বা এমনকিছু যার দিকে অগ্রসর হওয়া উচিৎ
• সংবেদনশীলতা – পুনরাবৃত্তিকভাবে সংস্পর্শের ফলে কোন উদ্দীপনার প্রতি সৃষ্ট বিবর্ধিত প্রতিক্রিয়া
• মাদকদ্রব্য ব্যবহার ডিজর্ডার - এমন একটি পরিস্থিতি, যাতে মাদকদ্রব্যের অনুচিৎ পুনরাবৃত্তিক ব্যবহার উল্লেযোগ্যভাবে শারীরবৃত্তিক ক্রিয়াকলাপের অবনতি অথবা মর্মপীড়ার দিকে ধাবিত করে
• সহনশীলতা – পুনরাবৃত্তিকভাবে নির্দিষ্ট পরিমাণে কোন ওষুধ সেবনের ফলে সৃষ্ট পরিস্থিতি, যার ফলে ঐ ওষুধের কার্যকরী প্রভাব ক্রমশ হ্রাস পায়।

দ্য ইউরোপিয়ান পাবলিক হেলথ এ্যাসোসিয়েশনের মতে, যৌনমিলনে সামর্থ্যবান পূর্ণবয়স্ক সুস্থ কোন ব্যক্তি যদি সপ্তাহে ৭ বারের অধিক যৌন কর্মকাণ্ডে সক্রিয়ভাবে সম্পৃক্ত হয় তবে তার উক্ত যৌন চাহিদা যৌন আসক্তি বলে গণ্য হবে।[11]
