নির্বাচনটি ছিল ছয় বছরের মধ্যে অনুষ্ঠিত পশ্চিমবঙ্গের চতুর্থ বিধানসভা নির্বাচন।[2] ১৯৭১ সালের পশ্চিমবঙ্গ বিধানসভা নির্বাচনের পরপরই রাষ্ট্রপতি শাসন চালু করা হয়েছিল।[2]
