Thane (nórdicu antiguu: Þegn[1]) yera un títulu nobiliariu asignáu a la guardia personal d'un lord (noble) nel reinu d'Escocia mientres la Edá Media, oldeáu a una baronía y con semeyances a los huscarles de los reinos viquingos en Escandinavia.[2]

Ente los thanes reconocíos na historia d'Escocia pueden atopase figures como Gillebride mac Gilladomnan, thane d'Argyll nel sieglu XII,[3] que foi padre de Somerled (m. 1164), el conquistador del reinu de Mann y les Islles, rei de Kintyre; John Lyon (m. 1435), primer thane de Glamis,[4] y Ulfcytel Snillingr (m. 1016) thane d'Anglia Oriental.[5]

William Shakespeare inmortalizó al thane de Cawdor, Macbeth, y al thane de Fife, Macduff na so obra Macbeth.[6]
