Demospongiae

Hul liggaam bestaan uit kieselnaalde of sponginevesels, of 'n kombinasie van albei, maar nooit uit kalknaalde. Die naalde is meestal 4-stralig, maar nooit 6-stralig. Die liggaamsvorm is baie veranderlik, en loop van vaas- of kussingvorme tot korsvormige plakke. Hierdie sponse kan ruim 1 meter hoog en breed word en is dikwels pragtig gekleurd. Hulle kan dikwels hele onderwatertuine vorm.

Hierdie sponse kom wêreldwyd voor, sowel in vlak as diep water, op die bodem en andere vaste oppervlakke.
