Bodhisattva

Bodhisattva is die Sanskrit-term in Mahayana-Boeddhisme vir ’n wese met bodhi (verligting). ’n Bodhisattva is enigiemand wat, aangespoor deur groot meelewing, bodhicitta opgewek het – die spontane wens om ander by te staan om boeddhaskap te bereik.[1] Dit is een van vier verhewe toestande wat ’n mens in die lewe kan bereik (die ander is ’n arhat, boeddha of pratyekaboeddha).[2]

Die gebruik van die term "bodhisattva" het mettertyd verander. In vroeë Indiese Boeddhisme is dit byvoorbeeld hoofsaaklik gebruik om spesifiek na Siddhartha Gautama in sy vorige lewens te verwys.[3][4]

Bodhisattvas is gewilde onderwerpe in Boeddhistiese kuns.
