Notes | After appreciating 12th-century paintings based on the Book of Odes (詩經) by the artist Ma Hezhi (馬和之) of the Song dynasty, the Qianlong Emperor (r. 1736-1795) of the Qing dynasty was inspired to produce a version in his own calligraphy, to which court artists were ordered to paint scenes to illustrate each of the odes. The result was 30 illustrated albums for a project that took six years to complete. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
